Newbies comp broken!!

K, not sure if this is in the right section, terribly sorry if its not.

A couple of months ago, my computer started making a grinding noise. Stupidly I ignored the problem until it got very loud.
So I took off the cover and it sounded like it was coming from the top of the motherboard near the power supply.
Flash forward to the present, my computer wont turn on. When i press the power button, the light on the motherboard comes on and a very quiet high pitched whine comes from the computer. After about a minute, there is a burning smell.
Is there a problem with the motherboard, or do i need a new power supply. I have a spare power supply from an older computer (probably 7 or 8 years old), are most power supplys compatable? Or am I looking in the complete wrong direction?
Thanks for any input.

hmm i was thinking that it could be a fan but then you said that the computer would not start
well maybe a fan short circuited?

K im gonna try to switch out the power supplys because the high pitched noise sounds like its coming from there... None of the fans anywhere in the computer come on and there is no life anywhere except for the little red light on the mobo.

Thanks for the replys!

a powersupply from 7 to eight years ago probably doesn't have the 20 or 24 pin connectors and probably wouldn't provide enough power, but you can check.

LOL... After testing for voltage, and finding nothing, I took the power supply apart (I heard somewhere that its a bad idea...).
Found a screw that short circuited the power supply, with burn marks all over the circuit board inside the power supply. Oh well, Looks like im off to Fry's
