hi i 've bought a new harddisk for operating system use, not SSD and just an ordinary seagate 1T 7200rmp something. I am going to DIY my first computer

my question is
1. is it always better to make the harddisk into partitions? and how many partition should i make ? it's 1T only
2. what is the advantage of making partiition?
3. how to partition the harddisk? i am going into install windows 7 on it. should it be partitioned before installing win 7 or do it after win 7 is installed?

Thanks you!

A partition that creates 2 logical drives (C: and D: presumably) will allow you to put the operating system on 1 partition, and all other files and folders, applications etc on the other.

Reimage the Windows partition whenever you want whilst having to do only minimal work to get it operational.

2 logical drives is all I would bother with. An then simply back up the second D: and the windows image on another drive in future.

hi but how to partition? the drive is newly bought and clean , nothing inside, and i am going to install windows 7 on it . when should i patition and how?

paritition it after installation of win 7 ? or partition before installation of OS?
and how to

Disconnect all drives except for the new one
Boot up windows install from DVD
Select install windows
Choose custom install
Select your new drive and choose Disk Options
Modify the size of it to your liking (generally select 25% of the 1TB drive for OS ~250000 entered).
Create new partition / volume - This gives you a new 250GB partition.
Select the partition again
Install Windows on the 250GB partition - forget the rest for now.

Once installed Windows, right click on computer, select manage and then disk management on bottom left.

Right click on the remaining ~750GB partition and there you can format it and store files etc.

1: It depends. I usually make two partitions and then one is for operating system and the other one is for personal data(music, documents...). If I was you i would make two partitions. One small for operating system and a large one for personal data.

2: The advantage is that you don't need to format partition on which your data are stored. You can format just the primary partition, where your operating system is installed.

3: During the installation of Windows 7 there will be section, where you can format and manage partitions.

Here is the picture of a section, where you can manage partitions:

Did you really need to repeat what I have already said?
