I just put together my new computer and when i try to start it up i get this message.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:\

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drive or drive controllers. Check your hard drive to ake sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Hello ANNR

Chrisalviola is right. You typically cannot swap a drive with Windows XP into a new box, unless the hardware is the same, or VERY similar. The biggest issue is typically the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hardware_Abstraction_Layer

The easiest solution is to install the drive in the new system, then boot from your XP CD, and do an 'in place upgrade" or repair installation. In-other-words, install Windows over itself.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

See Method 2 in the article. This will allow the system to detect the new hardware, and should fix any issues that the system has encountered.

Note that you will need to re-install all the Windows Updates (security updates etc.) but any programs and data will be in tact.

Hope this helps,

Jimmy
