Next Desktop computer - Dell or Gateway?

I am in the market for a new desktop computer. I AM NOT considering building one and have narrowed down the choices between Dell and Gateway. The Dell comes with a Pentium 4 and the Gateway with an AMD processor. Overall, I would appreciate any comments on these two computers (quality, processors, ect, ect). Thanks

I worked with quite a few Dells in the shop and I must say many of them seemed to be pretty well built systems. The only problems I ever had with them in the shop, too, was either harddrive or software related.

Gateway, I don't know as much about. Their older systems were pretty decent, but I don't know how they are today. I would, however, stick with AMD as they tend to be cheaper and a bit higher performace...

it would help to know a little more, such as the model number or the exact processor type. also, what do you want to do with it?

The Dell is the E510 with a 3.0 Ghz, Pentium 4, 80 GB HD, 1 GB RAM

The Gateway is the GT 5028, AMD, 240GB HD, 1GB RAM

I am going to be doing word processing, internet surfing, music and photos.

I know that Dell tends to be a little more customer friendly with problems and issues that might arise in the future than Gateway. The only real negative that I've come across is the fact that Dell only uses Pentium, and doesn't allow a choice. But, in most cases, that really shouldn't be an issue... Overall, I'd recommend going with the Dell.

Ehh I didn't know you had to have a custom build to know your way around computers, that must be the reason companys with 300+ machines choose to buy prebuilt...

I read the other thread about your tasks, you should go with the cheapest option really, you will not notice a difference anyway. :)

thats not exactly wat i was saying. i was saying that people who have little knowledge of computers go with dell because they offer easy customer support and pre-built comps.
