I saw this "Killer™ K1 Gaming NIC" at pre-built custom pc/alienwares/etc.... I was wondering what it was? What's NIC?

I herd it reduces lag and stuff, but is it a video card? It says network card so what is a network card?



Also, which is a better sound card? Without money being a problem, which is better? Gaming/music/media/entertainment/etc....?

A network card is the port for network data in and out of your PC, the KillerNIC cards allow networks based on an ethernet interface to bypass the Windows networking stack which means it can force packets of game data to have priority over the data stream. But at a high price it's a waste of money as the effects are less than a good improvement on a GFX card. The Fatal1ty is better out of the two sound cards, but there is little difference and Blu-ray burning allows you to do everything the standard reader does AND allows you to burn blu-ray discs.

And lastly, most of those bits are a waste of money at the moment as there are less-expensive products that do very good jobs and the HD wars are't over yet.
 
So does the nic replace the graphic card? or does it add onto it like an upgrade?

What brand has blu-ray? And what do you mean hd war isn't over? Hard drive?

Is there such thing as a blu-ray and not a blu-ray burner?

NIC - Network Interface Card... No it does not replace it. It can be kinda said as a upgrade...

Many. Research on Newegg and find the lowest. HD... HD films? High Definition? He's basically saying you'd be better off with HD than Blu-Ray.

Network interface card, basically a dedicated processor for your ethernet controller that offloads the processor. It'll probably reduce your ping a bit, but it's definitely not worth the price.

The Fatal1ty Professional has 64mb of x-ram while the XtremeGamer does not. But once again, the x-ram doesn't really do much so it's a waste of money.

I don't think you quite understand what Blu-ray is. Blu-ray is just a high definition/density optical disc Sony has created. Just like a DVD, it's a disc. A blu-ray player plays blu-ray discs while a burner plays and burns blu-ray discs.

No, they are two completely different things. The NIC will replace your onboard ethernet controller.

Sony developed the Blu-ray disc. And the HD war isn't over because HD-DVD is still in the race.

Yeah, look on newegg, there are a few blu-ray players
 
So the onboard ethernet controller is like a socket on your motherboard im assuming?

Also hd that you people are refering to is high definition, correct?

And is the war you people talking about just dvd vs hd for the "price" basically??

Your ethernet port is on the back panel of your computer. It's how you connect your computer to the internet.

Yes HD = high definition here

The "war" is basically between blu-ray and HD DVD, they're both next generation high definition discs.

there is a HD craze right now going on. two companies have developed methods for viewing HD content (on the new TV's and monitors that can dispaly the high quality content.) the two types are blu-ray and hd-dvd. They both have essentially the same quality, and each has its pros and cons, and both are fighting for the consumer (which hopefully will be good and to drive the prices down because right now the price for high definition movies is like 40 bucks.)

Thats true, but many other companies are using the term HD and High Definition for other things, such as many motherboards with onboard sound are now calling them "HD7.1 audio", even though theres really nothing HD about it.
 
So when I buy a new computer, do I need to buy a network card also? Cause I looked it up and it says it is not necessary to buy 1.

All new motherboards come with at least one ethernet port, so no it's not required or even recommended.
