No connection when Desktop sleeps?

Hi all,
I've just set up a wireless router/modem on my desktop PC. I've connected my laptop to it as well via a wireless adapter and everything is fine, except, when the desktop sleeps or is off i cant use the internet on the laptop? Any ideas why? Im not into computers so simple answers please lol The desktop is connected via a ethernet connection if that makes any difference

Thanks for the quick reply although im not completely sure of what you mean?
The router has been set up on the destop and the wireless function on the router enabled. On the laptop i have a belkin n1 notebook card which is installed correctly and picks up the router when the desktop is on. Only when the desktop sleeps or is off do i lose connection!

Does your internet connection go Modem>Desktop>Router or Modem>Router>Desktop? You should be able to access a wireless router with no desktop hooked up to it.
 
I shall check that out thanks, what is the easiest way to check this and should i be able to change it?
