No CPU Cooler

I have one computer running an Intel E6700 and I'm thinking of removing the cpu cooler and just running it bare. This system has no case and the mobo is vertical so I'm thinking ambient cooling might be sufficient.

Anyone ever try this?

Ambient cooling will not be sufficient. CPU's don't work like that - they need a cooler to pull the heat from the CPU and disperse it into the air. You'd probably be able to get it to run for all of a few minutes before it overheats and shuts down.

I would not run without cooler your temps would be sky high even if it ran.

I assume you want to do this to reduce noise ?

If you want to reduce noice, just get a Heatsink without a fan. You can not use a CPU without any cooler.

LOL. Thanks for all the feedback. My actual interest was just curiosity. I don't have any noise problems since I've dispensed with cases. The only fan I have, other than the PS, is the cpu. I think I'll cancel my experiment.
