No driver installed? But to the contrary... there is.

I'm a bit confused on this one. My wife has a laptop running Windows 7. We have a printer that is connected to it via a router. We can print, scan, communicate with the printer with no problems.

But on the "Devices and Printers" screen, there's a troubleshooting icon on her computer. When you run the troubleshooter, it says, "The driver for Officejet 6500 E709n is not installed. install the latest driver for the device." I get nowhere when I click "Apply this fix." I get stuck in an endless loop of applying the fix.

When I open up the Device Manager, it says "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element."

Obviously the drivers are installed as evidenced by the printer working with the computer (besides, I installed them myself). So why is it giving me this icon? And what can I do to remove it.

By the way, it's apparent that this is no emergency, but I would like to figure out what's going on for my own knowledge. If anyone has any suggestions, I would value your input.

Thanks in advance.

The only thing I can suggest doing is to reinstall the printer. This time, make sure windows doesn't try installing its own driver. Run the cd for the printer and only plug in the printer when it asks you to. This is where the driver can get corrupted between windows and the driver install.

Hey John. Pardon my ignorance, but how do I know if Windows is trying to install its own driver? Does a window pop up that gives me an option to accept or not? I reinstalled it, and didn't see any window, but I've still got the same situation in the device manager.

Thanks.
