No icons on startup!! Help!!

My computer fixed itself for now, but I don't trust it. Here is what happened:

As you may remember I was having problems with my computer freezing. Well it solved itself for a couple of months. Today the problem returned. Thinking it could be a service causing it, I selectively unchecked a few services that I didn't think it needed. Well, when I restarted the machine my icons wouldn't come up. I could do NOTHING. I did a system recovery using the XP cd so I didn't lose anything, believe it or not. Well, I did have my icons in safe mode. I tried a few things and nothing happened. On MSCONFIG I told it to not use ANY services and viola, it came up with my icons. Nothing would work though. No internet, no nothing. So I decided to check the "use system services" box and leave the "startup group items" box unchecked. Rebooted the machine and it's working beautifully. But what happened? Why did my icons disappear for 2 hours through multiple reboots and make me sweat bullets? What did I do to make it do this? BTW, I'm running XP SP 2 I think. I was about to call it a night, in fact my eyes were closing waiting for it to reboot and then all of a sudden my icons came back for no reason!

Anyone have any ideas why my computer took away my icons? And.....if it happens again, what's an easy way to get them back that doesn't involve a 60 minute XP restoration? Thanks for any help you guys can give me!!

Sounds like you turned off the service that showed your icons? lol

Not quite sure, but next time, before you turn any services off,
make sure you click the box:
Hide All Microsoft Services.
Msconfig2.jpg

I did that to make sure that I didn't turn off any microsoft services. That's what has me confused. I didn't turn off anything that had microsoft on it, just some of the "unknowns." It's very spooky to have no icons.

What can you do to bring icons back if upon reboot they disappear?

Had I turned off one of the services that made my icons disappear, then it wouldn't have made sense that my icons returned when I unchecked "load system services" and rebooted.

I ended up reinstalling XP and haven't had a hiccup since.

Good to see that you fixed your issue. I bet it had something to do with explorer.exe
