Hi guys. Im looking to buy a laptop, but i had a question. I have had Doom 3 since the week it came out. But it never worked on my computer since it didnt support he graphics since i have a chance to get a new laptop, i should get one that fully support the game. So my first question is should i even bother trynig to play the game on a laptop? the second question is what do you guys suggest that a person get to support the game as best they can, i dont really want t ocompromise any of what the ga,e has to offer, but if yo ucould suggest anything. The laptop is also going to be used for school purposes so obviously cant get like a voodoo or alienware. Thanks for the help!

Well my friend there is no harm in playing games on your laptop as long as you are trying games which your laptop configuration supports. But you should avoid playing games that can increase processor load especially requiring high quality graphics. Hope it helps you.

laptops are simply not made to play games unless u do go for an alienware... your probably better off going for a desktop because laptops are dissgustingly over priced and arnt easily upgradeable especially the GPU (graphic processing Unit) seeying though its an onboard GPU meaning its apart of the actual mother board.. so my suggestion to you is before u go buy a laptop really think if u will use it and if it really suits ur needs.. because for the same price u pay for a laptop u can get a desktop 3 times as powerful that can most probably play all the games out there AND it can be upgraded when need be!

sure you can get a laptop potent enough for gaming, but it'll cost you. i would say $1500+. i dont mean to say you have to spend a kaboodle on a laptop, but the more you spend, the better it will look and play. also, youll want to play future games, and that means youll want all the power you can get right now. so, post your budget, and we'll see what we can find for you.

Well, im actually getting the laptop for Med school because i just got accepted. So the only reason i want to play this game is because i payed for it and would like to play it, other than that i am not a fan of PC games at all. I just figured im going to have a laptop for a while before med school so in all of my useless classes i can play Doom, but i only want the gaming aspect for this game and only because i have the game and dont want it to be wasted, it might sound dumb but i hope you got my point.

I priced out an Alienware Area-51® m9750 to 2400, and i can get some hook ups through some people. A friend helped me out to customize it and basically he told me if it can play Bioshock, youre good. This may sound odd for a med student to buy such a laptop, but i figure if iever get bored, its at my disposal, plus its a gift so why not go all otu right? What do you guys think?

My other choice is the Dell XPS M 1710 Black, which came out to 2500. Im not sure which one to go with if im able to get one.

Getting a gaming laptop is really expensive, why don't you get a desktop? You can get a decent system that can handle Doom 3 without breaking a sweat for around $US1000 or even less.

if a laptop is what u definately want and u can get an alienware then go for it! their freakin good laptops and great for gaming...but still consider a desktop:D

Desktop is out of the question because of it being usless for me, im not going to be anywhere but the library for med school so a laptop is essential, the gaming aspect is just for the little tiem i kill during study breaks. So i guess its between the alienware and the XPS.

Ok, so this is what the setup will be:

Alienware Area 51 m9750

17" WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 LCD - Stealth Black

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB

2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz - 2 x 1024MB

Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio

1-Year AlienCare Toll-Free 24/7 Phone Support w/ Onsite Service

AlienRespawn v1.0 Recovery Kit – Windows XP Edition

Total: $2397
So, would this be considered a mid-range setup or high end? My freind who hleped me customize it said this will definitely last me a while befroe il need an upgrade. What do you guys think.

7000 or 8000 Series

That's a very good laptop. You could get that as a desktop for $1000.
The only thing is, the graphics card is not DX 10 capable, you need a Nvidia 8000 or more for that. Basically, you won't be able to play the games of the future (or vista), but, since it is a 7950, you will be able to play all DX 9 games very well.
The decision comes down to: do you want less power but have the latest technologies or have more power but old technology?

Well, as of now the 8000 isnt available on this laptop, but my friend who i previously mentioned is a laptop whiz, so i am more than sure he can help me out in the future, plus theres no guarantee that i will go hardcore on future games, but again i can get help to upgrade it, i hope. I just dont want ot end up geting the laptop and then realize i cant play full out on the games i have.

it will crush the games you have right now, but say a year from now, you might be looking at dated technology. i checked out the alienware, and it will be excelent for what you want. im jealous to be honest. btw, get vista instead of XP media center, i think the vista upgrade is free.

on a side note, why doesnt alienware offer a 8000 series card? other than power, the only thing i can think of is mobo compatibility (may require a redesign), or perhaps SLI problems (they offer the 7950 in SLI)

Guys...He just wants to play Doom 3....

I have a Compaq R4000 with one of the worst mobile graphics cards of all time (ATI 200M) and it plays Doom 3 perfect on moderate settings...

I cant see a decent newer laptop being unable to play that game.

Yeah i was wonderign after visiting this forum why they havent given it as an option, the 8000, but business i guess, in a few months itll be there haha. But thanks for the jealousy, i think haha. A friend told me vista is horrible for gaming, plus i was thinking to wait until i have a DX10 card then get vista, but again i heard its realy bad for gaming, nothing but aesthetics. Also, is it possible to load DX10 onto a DX9 card, or would it be better to get a DX10 card? But im hoping this computer i put together isnt a decent or moderate computer, im kind of expecting it to be close to top end, really close. I want to cry out of happiness when i see the games. In a year from now, what would be outdated other than the graphics card?

Just built a Del XPS 1710 with exactly the same specs and it came to a whopping 2800!!! thats 500 more than the alienware!! Does anyone think Dells are more flexible with upgrades than alienware? Or are they the same considering theyre the same company really?

Also, is there a reason why the empty space in the keyboard area is so big or is that common on 17" notebooks?

Still a little hesitant about the 1900 x 1200 resolution too, would 1440 x 900 still be crazy good? Everyone keeps reviewing the laptop with the clearview but no one comments on the 1440x900.
