Using my computer in the last two weeks has been wonderful, before then my computer would just automatically restart itself a few minutes after I turned it on, then it would appear to be alright until there was a random lockup or freeze up and I would have turn the power off and reboot it, this went on everyday. I was a bit worried about doing work on the computer then loosing all the work.
Been a electronics person and I used to fix computer power supply back in the 286 days when power supplys cost a arm and leg, so I ripped into the power supply thinking there was a faulty soldering joint and was most disappointed when it looked good enough to pass anybody quality test.
However I did clean out all the dust from heatsink fins, not before the micro came out of the socket together with the heatsink and there is only one way to get that back as two separate items, so anyway I let some isopropyl Alcohol sock into it for a few hours then they came apart with ease.
I was intending to put on a very thin layer of that clear silicon paste (were I could use my finger to get the thinest coating), as I hate that white crap it gets all over your good cloths, and the wash will not get it out, then someone told me about the silver heat conducing paste that is better than the white one, so I go a tube of that at just less than $20 (New Zealand).
Later I was told that I should of run the computer for a while before I took it apart, then taking the heatsink off the micro (pentium) would not of been a problem, but then I was convinced the problem was in the power supply and I did not want any lurking electrolytics charged up to give me a shock, I have had enough of those.
Ho I just love my computer now, better than I did up until two weeks ago.
