No OS for new hard drive

I currently have a compaq presario 6312US. Hard drive malfunctioning. Bought and installed new HD. I have all of the restore disks but cannot find the Red operating system disk. Is there anyone out there who can help? Want to fix this computer for my son. Called Compaq and they said if the computer is older than 5 years, they cannot help....do me right...your my only hope

your only option would be to buy a new OS and install that, without the disk from the manufacturer thats about all you can do, run Linux its free if you dont want to spend money

Yeah-you will have to buy Windows and use that, and you may have to get drivers as well.
If you want to look into Linux, look at Ubuntu, it's free, and one of the easiest distros.
