no signal message on monitor

My laptop monitor recently stopped working, so I bought a second hand TFT monitor and a rather cheap VGA cable. When I connect the monitor to the laptop it appears to be working O.K. to start with - the windows splash screen comes up, but then the screen goes blank and I get the no signal message. I've tried it several times, and it stops working in exactly the same place.
Any ideas ? defective monitor, cable , or should I be pressing one of the F keys while booting up ?
 
Boot to safe mode and see if the screen stays on. If it does, then either resolution or refresh rate needs to be changed.
 
Uninstall the driver in safe mode. Then boot back to regular mode and reinstall the graphics driver. It's also possible that you need to set which active monitor you need. Go into the video settings to do that. Then if that don't work then uninstall the driver and reinstall.
