Hey guys ive just built a mate a computer around a M2NPV-VM asus motherboard. It was a fresh harddrive so i loaded up windows xp. Now my problem is the computer is working fine except it has no sound. The sound driver wouldnt install and when i tried installing it manually it said I had the wrong hardware. Its got onboard sound its soundmax. Now i have no sound, so i thought id chuck in an old soundcard lying around to see if that would work. When I tried to install the drivers it would just crash? Real random any ideas guys please.

Did you remember to look in the device manager under sounds and gaming devices to see if anything there had yellow marks on it? If you didn't have the cd that comes with the board you most likely downloaded the wrong drivers. As far as the sound card now installed did you remember to disable the onboard sound in the system bios? With that enabled you won't get sound out of a pci card.

yip done all that no yellow marks. The cd is an original one with the motherboard but the driver doesnt work. But in reality it shouldnt even need a driver for onboard sound with xp! Im starting to wonder if the board does have onboard sound. In bios i can only enable and disable hd audio (high density) cheers any more ideas

If you can enable/disable audio in the bios you found the setting for the onboard sound. Board specifications always reveal all.

If the cd was scratched up or covered with finger prints it won't read too well. But updated drivers is one thing that Asus is noted for having onhand at their support site. If the updates don't work it sounds like the audio chip is...? http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

HD audio stands for "high definition audio". I'd love to know what they mean by that. :P

Anyways, when you install the external soundcard make sure that the internal one is disabled in the BIOS or you'll have problems. It sounds like the internal one is roached.

Always a day late and a dollar short.

Cheers for your help guys it sounds like the sound chip is toast. Im not a big fan of asus boards either so this isnt helping.

Asus has suffered a little lately apparently. But when you start pushing boards out to meet increased demand you have the occasional defect. When a friend built a new case before the summer the first board and the replacement failed to even start. I made the rec to go with either a model or make and model. He went with a different model and has had no problem since. He uses onboard there along with two other builds with Asus boards.

ok guys heres an email from asus support
Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.

My name is ZYC, and I would be assisting you today.

First, please go into device manager,

if there is a unknown PCI DEVICE listed,

that means the onboard audio is detected,

you can begin driver installation.

onboard audio is a AD1986A hd-audio chip,

to install this part driver,

you must make sure your system is windows XP with sp1 or sp2,

if current OS is original windows XP, please update to SP1 or SP2 for audio driver.

If there is no unknown PCI DEVICE before audio driver installation in device manager,

the Onboard audio is not detected at all,
Ok there is an unkowen pci device in device manager so imguessing its picking it up. Now my OS is straight winxp with no service packs for the obvious reason. Would i really need a service pack to enable onboard audio or to install a motherboard driver? doesnt really make muchm sense to me but do you guys know a way around it at all?
Cheers

Nope, except get a legal OS? lol. :P (I'm assuming that's the obvious reason. hehe). Why not just try it? What have you got to lose? Right click on the Unknown Device and select "Properties > Update Driver". Point it to your driver disk. Either it will work or it won't. Worth a shot.

no it doesnt work i need sp1 which I cant get. And im not paying for a microsoft product! Is there a way to disable onboard sound completely and use my own card and drivers? cheers

You go into the bios itself and look usually in the advanced or advanced chipset section there to enable or disable the onboard sound. Once that has been done you will want to remove the drivers for onboard and then install the pci card of choice. XP without SP2? ouch on that one! You are missing out on all of the security fixes there. FireFox time for you apparently. :P
