No sound on re-installed xp

My computers sound was working fine, but I had to re-install windows xp home. So now I've got everything running smoothly except there's no sound. There's also no sound icon on the taskbar. I've gone into the control panel's sounds options and the option to display the icon is greyed out. In fact pretty well all of the options are greyed out. One of the first things I did after installing xp was update a bunch of drivers with Driver Max, not sure if that could be the problem. Any ideas?

Go into device manager and see what is listed for sound, video, and game controllers section. Most likely you need to install the sound card driver as Xp doesn't have very good sound driver support. Look for any devices labeled unknown device with yellow exclamation points next to it. You will need the make and model number of the computer is its an OEM machine such as a Gateway, Dell, HP, etc to look up on the manufacturers website for the driver. If its a custom build, you will need the model of the motherboard.

Also, those driver update programs are worthless, use your own common sense and update manually by going to manufacturers website to get the updated drivers.

heres what's listed under sound video and game controllers:

ATI T200 Unified AVStream Driver
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

None of those have the exclamation point beside them however all of the following under "other devices" do have it

Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus
Ethernet Controller
SM Bus Controller
Unknown Device

My computer was custom built, heres the motherboard model

ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5B Rev 1.xx

Don't you still have the motherboard cd? That will have all the correct drivers on it. If not go here and download the correct drivers. You will need the chipset driver, audio driver and the lan driver. The unknown device should be the Microsoft UAA bus driver which should get installed when the sound driver install starts. If the UAA driver won't install correctly, try this. This needs to be installed first before the actual sound driver.

Installed from the disk, everythings working fine now. Can't believe I didn't notice the lack of the LAN symbol, I just went ahead and installed my wireless network card without even realizing lol. Anyway thanks for the help
