No sound with Windows 7

I just installed windows 7 this weekend on my xp pro machine. I have a gigabyte s series mb and a duel core 2.8 gig amd processor. The install went well. The built in drivers that came with windows worked well, or so I thought. I went to listen to some music yesterday and no sound. I tried installing the audio drivers that came with my mb, but that didn't work. I went to the gigabyte website and dl the newest drivers for my mb, which where for vista, and they didn't work.

Is there a way to tell if my is sending the sound to the outputs on the back of the pc? When I had xp installed, I had a small red speaker symbol, for realtec, on the bottom right of my screen. When I would plug in the speakers or a mic, it would open and tell me it was plugged in. I can't find anything similar to that with 7. Maybe the audio driver isn't the problem. Maybe windows 7 doesn't recognize the built in sound card's outputs?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to device manage in the control panel and see if the sound card is listed.
Also have you changed the input socket you`ve put the cable into?
And a stupid, but one i did myself:rolleyes: are you sure the sound is not muted, and the volume knob is up?

Best of luck.

Yeah, it shows up in device manager.
I did change the socket. My built in sound card has four outputs for sound. Non of which seem to work.
No, it is not muted. The sound volume is at 90%. LOL

Just to check, when you say it`s listed in device manager, has it got a yellow icon near it?
If not then it`s really strange how it isn`t working.

Tagging on to what CarlC last mentioned here...

You may also want to confirm that you are not set to some sort of digital output and that all your analog outputs are enabled.

Right click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select playback devices. What do you have listed? Which device is set to the "Default" device. It should have a green check next to it.

Hi,

Right-click the speaker icon on your taskbar > Select 'Playback Devices'
In the empty space, Right-click and select both 'Show Disconnected/Disabled Devices'

Do you see icons for your speakers and headphones now? You may need to enable both of these.

You can also try the troubleshooter to discover any connection issues that may exist, instructions are below:

Click 'Start' > Select 'Control Panel'

Type troubleshooting in the top-right search field > Select 'Troubleshooting'

Click 'Hardware and Sound' > Select 'Playing Audio'

Please let us know if this did or didn't help to resolve your problem.
Cheers

I will rock you!

That didn't work either. I reinstalled the vista driver I downloaded from the gigabyt site, rebooted, plugged in my speaker wire. I got a pop up asking which speakers these were. I selected front speakers and presto. They finally work. Thanks for all the help everyone.
