Hi, my family have this dell XPS M1710 laptop. When I turn it on, No display come on the screen, but I can see the hard drive working and hear the windows XP sound come on when it finished boot. but no display, what do you guys think? is the video module? if is don't it should stop the computer from booting? I try external monitor, nothing sameway. any idea? Dell support say the video module cost $351.00 US dollars. The computer was top of the dell line, but that was then. What do you guys think?
Thank you.
Paul

A quick Google search shows that you are far from the first person to have the same trouble with this exact model, and that it is almost definitely the graphics card. Here is an eBay seller offering a service that claims to fix the problem. The feedback seems to indicate that the seller has had some pretty significant success with the repair, however you do need to be able to remove the video card and send it in.

Thank you, I try to contact the seller to see if he/she can repair it. and made an offer. hope is not a scam.
Thank you again.

normally if POST can't pass video test, the computer won't start OS, buy you said you can hear the windows start sound. so are you sure the problem is the video module? you tried to connect an external monitor, did you try to switch funcition key? sometimes the external monitor can't switch on automatically for some reason. BTW, the graphic card is less than $200 from Ebay.

I have bought the repair from this person and it worked for a little more than a year. It have problem recently. This person no longer have anything to sale. so I search Ebay and found some similar cards for sale about $90 -$130. I wonder if the nvidia 7950GTX will work on my laptop? would it too hot and cause problem. I don't play games but I do play couple video the same time as I hook up another monitor to this laptop.

Thank you for any input.

I do not have too much experience with laptops however I do know that the 1710 model was fitted with a 7950gtx as an option so it would be possible to use that video card.
