alright heres what we got. my brother came into my room a while back and asked me to be quiet and listen to the high pitched noise that was in my room. blah blah blah i heard it. he told me that my hard drive was dying most likely, and that defragging the computer once a week should help it, but i still get this slightly annoying high pitched noise. any suggestions on how to fix this nuisance!!!?!?!?!?

well i am prety sure defrag will not help. and not it does not have to be your hd it could be a fan. but in anycase i dont think there is a way of fixing it

I doubt it's the hard drive making the sound, and even if it is, defragging it will not do anything. I think it's more likely that your PSU is making the ringing sound. As for fixing it, I don't think there's much you can do short of replacing it.

so there is no way of fixing it? if there isnt, thats alright, i'm planning on getting a build all planned out for myself soon anyways, i guess ill just tough it out, although its F******! annoying!!! haha, thanks guys.

Yes I agree with the PSU idea. I had one that did that.. very annoying... It's not very expensive to buy another PSU, especially if its an older system.

I have head some hard drives making some pretty high-pitched squeals in the past! It'd be easy enough to test; simply disconnect the drive and turn the system on...

Also, I have heard components on the motherboard make similar noises. Failing capacitors and all.

True, it could be from any capacitors, my monitor once squeaked like that, boy was it annoying.:(

Anyways, the easiest way to tell is yank the powercord from the hard drive and boot the computer.

I had my monitor squeel like before, But that's only because I had accidentally busted the very end part of the cathode ray tube, I believe it was the electron gun, or the heater. I thought it was going to blow up...

haha! its great hearing all of your stories. sound pretty funny and very common to mine! ill give it a shot next time i open up the pc. i need to clean it out soon as well. thanks guys ill give it a shot and post a new thread soon so keep your eyes pealed!

It might not be a fatal squeal :). It could be normal. It should hold for a while, maybe even a few years. Of course, if it is reaaally loud, then I dunno. :D
