noisy harddrive

howdy everyone,

i just got a WD800 80 gb hardrive to upgrade to my comp. I installed it and it seems to work okey. The only thing is that it makes this constant anoying very high pitched sound and seems to be running all the time. is there anyway to set up the harddrive so that it doesnt constantly run? Its a slave drive and i am only using it to store mp3's and other files but its not running my OS so when i am not going into the drive could there be a setting to make the drive stop running while its not in use? I hope so cos althought the noise is not too loud, it does get anying after a few minutes!

Howdy Tom,

I tried going to power options but it only gives me a choice to shut down all harddrives after a given time. I just want to shut down the 80gig until i use it and what not. I am wondering if i can somehow choose which drive i want to have shut down after a certain time

When I set my hard drives to shut down after a certain time, they both STAY shut down until either one is accessed. For instance, I have mine set to shut down after 5 minutes of inactivity. Then say I have to access my Master drive after 10 minutes. Master drive spins up, but the Slave drive does not.
