well, i am tryin to put thi old comp. together and i have every thing hooked up but when i turn it on it doesnt have a picture. the green light on the moniter doesnt even turn on. i am very new to this stuff and it may be a stupid prob but i need help. can someone help me?? thx

Hi, it would be power supply or video card, or parts aren't installed correctly. For power supply, I bought a 500W Athena power supply from this company, it works well and the support from this company is really great: http://www.orangehope.com

Does it go an orange stand-by colour, and stay like that? Have you tried a different monitor? when this happened to me, it turned out to be the monitor...

Could also be a monitor problem.

I think the only way we are gonna find out what is broken or is causing this, is by trial and error...

I remember this happening to me, when my monitor went down the drain... this has also happened to me when I tried to OC my CPU, and the bios tried running the CPU at a higher FSB than it should of. Thus, I couldn't even access the bios to change it, because as soon as I reset the computer, the monitor would go into stand-by... I think you could try resetting the BIOS, by removing the battery from your motherboard for 5 minutes or so. then insert it back in, and give it a go ;)

Hehe I had this problem on my first build...turns out I forgot to plug in the power cord from the back of the monitor to an outlet (originally thought you just hook it up to video card).

May sound stupid but just trying to eliminate possibilities :)

Factualpuddle: Also check the ram, one stick at a time. Are all your connections proper, hookups, etc. If your getting the orange light, a good possibility could be the motherboard. Make sure everything is properly connected on the motherboard and from the motherboard to your optical drives. If all else fails, recommend building one component at a time.

Well then the monitor aint getting power :)

yea, when i turn it on the orange stand by light comes on. i have tried diff. monitors and it still wont work.

Well in that case it must have went green first. Regardless, the problem isnt in the monitor but rather before the signal leaves the case. Consider resetting the videocard and the RAM. And depending on the rest of the system, see if there is sufficient power
 
When you turn the power on to the PC do any lights on the PC come on? i.e. HDD Status, Power, etc??

Do you hear any "beeps"?

What type of video card is it?

Sometimes there is a BIOS setting that selects the "Video signal priority" and will have settings including "PCI" or "AGP"... if this setting is not the same as what you have actualy installed then you may not get a signal to the monitor.
 
Thought it could have been solved by clearing CMOS, My PC didnt turn on after i overclocked it too much once, clearing the CMOS solved it. :)
