Alright so im new to the whole computer scene as far as customization goes. I have an older 01-02 style computer with a 1.0GB processer 256MB of ram and a 64MB video card. Im planning on updating this computer a bit and im ready to start buying. Im in a computer class at school so they will help me with it a bit also. But my question is can I just buy ANY case that I think looks cool and have it be compatible with my hardware or do I have to search deeper into it to see what fits and what doesnt or buy adapters etc..

Thanks in advance,
Stephen

No, as long as it fits the ATX form factor you should be ok. Your motherboard will come with a faceplate on it for the back of the case. I recommend looking at Antec or Chen Ming (they make Antec chassis') aluminum cases. They are mint to work on and nice looking too.

The first thing to look at before spending any large amount of money on a case is the overall budget for upgrading. Being that the board, memory(PC100?), cpu, and video are long outdated you would need to know what type of board you currently have if you plan to swap cases for it. If it is a complete from factory built if may be in an AT not ATX type case.

An AGP 8x/4x video card will for the most part be able to run on an older system depending on the operating system installed. 98 or newer in most cases. You can find a long list of adequate 128mb cards at this time for low prices. Some places still handle the older PC100 and PC133 types of memory.
