I just got my new PSU and I think it's dead. I figured I would go ahead and plug it into the wall before I put it inside the case, flipped the switch, and...well...nothing. Do I need to have it connected to anything in order for it to work? Kinda like a DC thing or something? Or would this in fact be...dead?

If it's an ATX powersupply you have to flip the switch on the back then use a paperclip or some other wire to connect the green wire to a black wire on the 20/24pin main power connector.

It's actually the one that I have in my profile right now, the future build one. Grrr!! I think I got sent a dead one :(

like Cromewell said you can use a paper clip to test it

the PSU will not tirn on without the motherboard powering it on unless you jumper the green wire to a black wire on the 20/24pin

Careful, that's got 72 amps on the 12 volt line; that's enough to cook yourself...

There's a big chance yours is good. As has been said, it won't start unless you jump it or actually hook it to a motherboard.

Yeah, you gotta have that motherboard "switcher" connected for it to work, with a paper clip and some rubber handle pliers, lol. I have jolted myself way too many time, in some ways you wouldn't expect, a chandelier, a cable under a comp desk at school, a "water logged" cell phone, an old lightswitch at school, a few more  Yeah, don't play games with electricity.
