Nooby Question Concerning Barebones

I've been wondering about this for quite a while.

What exactly do barebones give you? I'm starting to believe they give you everything, but the price doesn't seem like it can be possible. Do you get memory, a CPU, graphics card, etc..? Or do you have to buy these seperatly?

Thanks,
PP

It's difficult to define 'Barebones', some companies define it as the complete tower sans anything, including software, some make it as everything but drives and some have no GPU's etc...

What one were you looking at?

Generally a barebones computer will only have a case, motherboard, and CPU, although there is no industry standard. You won't get a complete computer, that's for sure. Just look at what's included in the specs page, and it'll tell you. Barebones are generally meant for upgrading, not generally for building new computers.

some just require you to have a CPU and RAM. I would like to find a cheap one for the biz's I build for, that way I don't have that much decision-making responsibility

Yes, as everyone has said. Most of the time, it is not everything that you need. An example of a barebone system would be something such as:

1. The tower itself.
2. The motherobard.
3. The Cpu.
4. The Psu.

That would probably be it; and it would probably be priced cheap such as 300 dollars. It basically is just the vital components that you need in a build that should be compatibly with eachother. Such as, the case would need to fit the motherboard; the cpu would have to be the right socket for the motherboard; the psu is usually always standard.

Everything else, you need to get yourself. Such as the video cards, sound cards if you need, the hard drive, etc...

Ok, so then, I would just need Memory, Sound&Video cards, HD, Fans, and that's pretty much it? (Am I missing anything), and is it better to get one of these, and upgrade? Or just to buy all the parts from NewEgg (Buy the MBoard, CPU, PSU, Chassis) seperatly?

Thanks,
PP

It depends, sometimes it is; sometimes it's not. What you can do is look at a barebone system and go to newegg or a similar site and try to build it exactly or as close to the barebone as possible. As in trying to have the same motherboard, cpu, etc.. Then see what the price comes out to be.

The only drawback I see with some barebones are that sometimes you get one good thing, but the other's are pretty bad. Such an example would be that you get a core 2 duo processor, but a case that looks absolutely horrendous; etc..

barebone lappy right? well, barebones are like that guy said hard to define, because they also sometimes lack keyboards and some are just a mobo in a case, others are a case with fans and some are everything but a processor. it looks like your on the right track though. if i were building one, id go wth a barebone that had a upgadeable mobo. i look at a barebone on nextag, which i guess isnt as good as neweggs awesomeness, and it was around 400(only a 15inch) with a totally upgradeable mobo up to the highest core2s it had a lot of room for how small it was across. once its buit, id like to ask how much you spent in total, im in the market for a newlappy sometime and am wondering about barebones aswell.
