Hi,

A friend got the Norton 2007 internet security for me. He send it to me in a file and since i have downloaded it, my computer is working really slow. When i opened my yahoo e-mail a window popped up that said the page was claiming to belong to "rmd.atdmt.com" but that it actually belonged to "a248.e.akamai.net"... i have no idea what this means and quickly logged out.
Also i was looking at a website where never before things just pop up and a window popped up saying i'm at risk because i visit adult websites and that others could possible see my creditcardnumber... i don't visit adultwebsites and i don't even own a creditcard and i am for sure the only one that uses my computer, then the website i was viewing suddenly switched to the website of this pop up window(and i do also have popup blocker) i think it was called "driveclean" or something, i closed out of there immediately...

My question is, could the norton file i downloaded have anything to do with it? Or is norton just detecting all the weird stuff? I ran a scan with norton and it didnt detect anything weird. But then why is computer running so slow? Help please....

It sounds like you got Norton illegally, which can't be talked about here.

As for it being slow, it's just Norton. It takes up a lot of CPU and RAM and can really slow down your computer if you dont have much to begin with.

First of all im fairly sure what you have done is illegal, but Norton is known for system slowdown and especially norton 2007, if you dont have a modern computer running DDR 2 RAM of at least 1 GB and a fast processor then it will really slow you down. Also, if you are using IE (internet explorer) then the Norton Fraud monitoring software will advise you against visintg websites which may be ableto grab your personal data and infecty your machine with spyware. The driveclean window is jsut an advert laded onto some websites as they pay the site to run this ad, its a pain in the butt i know, the things that pop up saying yo are at risk and need to get software to protect you are sut adverts and my advice would be to stop going on these websites

i dont know if it's ok to ask this here then, if it's not then i apologize... but how can i know if my friend got norton illegally? i don't want to insult him by asking...and if it was illegal then does that mean it's not the real norton? as you can tell i'm sure, i don't know much about computers... should i uninstall it?

its probably the real norton setup file but as the guys said its illegal if he sent it you with a keygen or something.

it probably contains a virus too so i would uninstall Norton and download the free and legal version of avast and scan for any nastys.

remove norton first though ;)

Jennifer,

The popups, did you mean to say they were for DriveCleaner?

If so, it's more than likely your Norton file came packed with a Vundo trojan.

You may want to post a HijackThis log for me to have a look at.

Download HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop to start the installation.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back to this thread and Paste the log (Ctrl+V) in your next reply.
