Not Detecting HD

Hi,

I have an Acer Extensa 5210 which I am trying to install a fresh copy of windows XP on. I insert the disk and the it runs through as normal until it would usually let you choose which hard drive you would like to install the OS onto, at which point it says that it can not dectect a Hard Drive on the Laptop.

In the Bios, it has the HD and its serial number, so it's definately plugged in and working. Any ideas on why it can't see the Hard Drive? Any solution?

Thanks for any help
Nathan

Check the bios for a SATA controller setting and change it to native IDE or IDE from ahci/raid. If there is no setting then you will have to slipstream the sata controller driver into a new install cd. Are you using an Acer recovery cd or an actual Microsoft Windows XP install cd?

Thanks for your help,

In the BIOS there is the first Tab 'Information' which it lists the details of the HDD, Toshiba, and its serial No. It lists the HDD by 'IDEO Model Number'. Here there are no options to change anything. The HDD has a SATA connection if this means anything, I have checked.

The next Tab is 'Main' where the only option to alter anything is the Video Memory.

'Security' where you can set Passwords.

'Boot' where you can change the boot priority, it has first 'CD' where it lists the DVD Drive and second 'IDEO' where it list the Toshiba HDD. There are no sub menus under any of these.

So from what I can tell there is no SATA controller setting obvious, it doesn't appear to have many settings at all.

I am using a Windows Install Disc; XP SP2, not one of Acer's Recovery Discs.

This being the case, what do I need to do?

Thanks again for your time,
Nathan

Your best bet would be to contact Acer for a recovery cd so that it will automatically install the sata controller driver at the beginning of installation.

Most of the Acers I've fooled with, its listed in the bios under the Main tab at the bottom as SATA options or mode with AHCI or IDE
