Not formatting HDD before installing Vista

I had some files on my HDD before installing xp so I did not format. Xp worked fine, but when I ugraded to vista I have been getting blue screen of death. It happens every now and then and I have no idea why...

could this be because of not formatting the HDD?
 
When you say blue screen of death.. have you made a note of the error/s that occur?

Next time it happens make a note of them and post it up here.

Yes, the error message is important but just the first bit with the numbers and the error name the rest is a generic you should restart now statement.

It's possible it's from not formatting the drive but I'd lean towards something else first.
 
If you know when the last time it did this, there is most likely a log in the Event Viewer that shows the error that was on the blue screen.

Control Panel > Admin. Tools > Event Viewer
 
That is usually a driver problem. If you know the file name listed at the end of the message you can find out which driver is causing the problem and update it.
