Not sure what causes problem (disk or mainboard)

Hey guys,

my computer has been acting weird for some time now. It started with the occasional bluescreen and sometimes it would only boot after the 5. or 10. try, giving a different error each time (mostly Windows files that were supposedly missing). It got worse and worse til finally I just got a "Disk Read Error" when trying to boot. The disk wasn't even in the boot list anymore and couldn't be read by any rescue program.

I just formatted the disk and installed Windows 7 on a new partition. For two days, everything was perfectly fine. Then I got the first bluescreen. Now, the computer works fine for 5-10 minutes after booting, then everything slows down extremely and finally crashes, producing a bluescreen with a stop 0x0F4 error (which means a crucial system process was shut down). This happens each time.

I tried memtest86, let it run for 6 hours and got 7 passes without any errors, so I'm guessing the RAM is fine. The disk SMART data also looks perfectly ok with an overall 99% fitness and 100% performance. This is kind of where I don't know what to do, because I really thought my hard disk was the problem. Now I guess the mainboard is left. I will try to plug in a different disk at the weekend, but maybe you guys have any ideas.

Did you test the hard drive with the manufacturer diagnostic utility? If not, go to their website, download it, and run it.

Let's see if we can't get some better information on the bluescreens.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

I just did that and it says 0 crashes.. which is clearly not correct

EDIT: Now the computer wouldn't boot at all and didn't recognize the hard drive. I used the Windows 7 repair options and now I can boot again, also the system is running for 25 minutes now and everything is fine (so far). Maybe there's a problem with the SATA cable or the contacts? A short circuit, maybe? Because I live in a student dormitory and we used to have 1-2 power blackouts per week for some time, could that cause such problems?

Yes,.power outages while the computer is on usually causes errors on the hard drive. Usually a checkdisk or drive diagnostic will fix the errors.
