my network at work runs these old dell computers, with windows xp, and Microsoft essentials virus protection.
we also have our phone system via VoIP. The network icon says "locale area connected" it shows internet connected, but unable to get online on any of the work computers. I took a laptop up to the room where the router and modem were and bypassed the switch and plugged right into the modem, and I was able to connect to the internet. So, figured the switch was bad, got a new one, hooked it all back up, and still not able to access the internet and our phones do not work. However, every now and then I am able to get on the internet for about 2 mins, but still no phones. Some times we get a dial tone, but cant dial anything. Spent 4 hours on the phone with century link (isp) and we did troubleshooting but could not find a solution. We have 2 T1 lines. I spent another 2 hours on the phone with an IT guy, who also did troubleshooting with me. We changed some settings and did some ping tests (they always timed out) but again no solution. I am thinking some sort of network virus. When I look at the network connection it shows a big number for packets being sent but only 45 packets received, and our internet is using 50% network utilization, but no one can access the net. anyone have any clue what might be going on here? or what steps I can take to try to get us back up and running again?

thanks for your help!!
