i have a hd question.

i have a compaq notebook and was wondering if notebook hard drives are different than desktop hard drives? i was just wondering because i know that a lot of notebook ram is not like desktop ram. does this apply to hdd's too?

does this apply to all notebooks or are there some exceptions?

if there are, how would i find out? i guess i could take it out and measure it or something like that but will my data be erased?

There are no exceptions. They are all gunna be 2.5"...and don't even bother taking it out, the hard drive will be 2.5"....no it wouldn't erase your data if you decided to take it out for any reason

Yup, they are 2.5" rather than 3.5".
Not just that they also use a different "ATA/IDE" connector with 44 pins.

Form factors
  • 2.5" 19mm 3.94 x 2.75 x 0.75 (LWH) - these are the largest capacity drives
  • 2.5" 17mm 3.94 x 2.75 x 0.67 (LWH) - midrange capacity
  • 2.5" 12.5mm 3.94 x 2.75 x 0.49 (LWH) - used in subnotebooks
  • 2.5" 12.5mm 3.94 x 2.75 x 0.37 (LWH) - used in stupidly-small notebooks
