Notebook sounds like a Jet engine...

I'm using my old sony vaio with my att connect card for internet until we can get the cable hooked up for DSL. I'm running it on a cooling pad, and when I'm surfing the web it sounds like a jet engine. Processor is at 50% or more all the time. I'm only running firefox, and KKKP (running linux dialup program for the connect card). I'm affraid this thing is going to blow up. How worried should I be?

I'd count my self lucky to have such a cool sounding computer!

But srsly, it sounds like a fans farked, depending on which one, you may have cause to worry.

Pretty worried, Sony Vio fans going out are pretty common. Watch your laptop temperature.

the laptop will shut down if it overheats, as long as it stays on, then you are probably fine. if you are so inclined, you can take the heatsink and fan off, reapply some better thermal paste and clean the dust out of the fins, should help things a little
