Notebook's failure at booting up.

My wife has an ASUS Eee notebook, that had been working OK - until today. At each attempt to boot it we get the following message:
..............................................
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows Root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please reinstall a copy of the above file

...............................................

This, more than likely, will translate into our having to buy an OS software disk for it, seeing as how the restoration disk which came with the unit has, since, been misplaced. Or is it in any way possible that just the referenced file could gained (legally, of course) from somewhere?

What version of Windows are you running on there?

If it is Windows 7 then use
http://www.mydigitallife.info/downl...cial-32-bit-and-64-bit-direct-download-links/

Make sure you download the one that is for your computer otherwise your product key will not work. Your windows product key and info can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

I am sorry if you are using XP, I have never been able to find a legal download of XP. This is probably microsoft is still trying very hard to get its users off XP they made it impossible to get it.

If your system is running XP and you do not want to spend the money give Ubuntu a go around.

Thanks, DM.

UPDATE: Just found that I was wrong. it WAS XP that this unit had on it. Will try that Ubuntu.

In answer to your question, I am not sure just which OS version (between Vista-32bit and Win7-32bit) on this unit, but I know for sure that it wasn't XP. The unit had been sitting for a while, before my wife had put it up. But it ran just fine before being retired for a period of time. I wasn't aware of the fact that the unit hadn't been used for a while, until yesterday. But, on first (and all subsequent attempts at) boot-up, we have been experiencing the outlined problem.

There was no indication, on the unit's label, as to what OS version the netbook contained, and the serial numbers will be a bit difficult to read. But we will manage that. I just hope that one of these downloads will work for us.

Thanks, again. Mighty nice of you to step in as you did.
