Nothing but new problems after upgrading to Win 8.1 (Wi-Fi and HDMI sound)

So, after using Windows 8 happily for about a year, I gave in to the persistent notifications about the "upgrade" to 8.1 and installed that, pardon my French, bullshit, which left me with just issues and no advantages whatsoever...
I have two major issues which I can't solve:

First a wireless connectivity problem on my tablet (Acer Iconia 510): I already posted this on the Microsoft forums but I just don't get any further in solving it there so I hope you guys can help me. I guess it doesn't make any sense to repeat the whole thing here, so here's the link: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-networking/wifi-not-reconnnecting-on-return-from-sleep-after/0b2459a1-fff1-4911-869c-95c7b2b441b9?tm=1412246996175

Basically I can't get connected to the university Wi-Fi anymore but feel free to read the whole story :)

Second, I can't get my Laptop (Asus X750JB, http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/X750JB/) to play sound via HDMI anymore unless I restart the computer. I looked for updates for all relevant drivers but they were all up to date already. There's also no "exclamation mark triangle" over any of the audio devices in the device manager. I tried different options for the second screen like "duplicate", "only second screen" and so forth.
Strangely, the laptop reacts to the HDMI cable being plugged in by quickly turning off the screen and then right back on as it did before updating to Win 8.1 but the computer speakers keep playing.
The receiving end of the HDMI connection is a Marantz SR5007 audio receiver; its displayed in the "devies and printers" window without showing any obvious problem and I also updated its drivers. The picture gets transferred fine to the connected projector but I don't care for the picture (I don't use the projector for the PC), what I need is sound cause the built-in speakers make me barf.

If it wasn't such a complex task to get back to Win 8, I'd have done it right after the update was done...

Now I really hope you guys can help me; any help is greatly appreciated!

Contact Acer and ask them to supply a working driver for your tablet and contact Asus and ask them for a driver for your laptop.

It's the mfrs's responsibility to provide drivers, not MS.

Will do, thanks for the quick response!

So the drivers found (or not found) by the MS device manager aren't necessarily the latest or correct ones?

Correct. MS tries to have updated drivers in the build but there's just too many for all to be included.

Oh okay, the MS driver updater is pretty useless then...

Alright I manually updated both devices, but that didn't cut it, at least not on the laptop. I don't know about the tablet yet, but I will later today.

I downloaded the "Realtek Audio Driver" since it was the only thing showing up under "Audio" for my laptop. Then I let the device manager look for and install it, rebooted and nothing changed. So I ran the setup of the driver itself, rebooted twice, once after deinstalling the current driver and once after installing the new one - still no changes.

But I found out that it connnects via HDMI if i put it to "sleep" and then back on. Can you make something out of that?
Also, ever since the update, the laptop doesnt make that "something has been plugged in"-sound anymore when plugging in the HDMI.

Alright, since the forum is running again, I'll post an update:

I solved the Wi-fi problem the easiest way imaginable. Making Win "forget this network" and then reconnecting solved the issue; Now the connection stands after wakeup and startup.

So that's that, but the HDMI sound on the laptop stays compromised. Hopefully someone knows answer to that.

Regards

EDIT: Well, I guess I was a bit quick stating the Wi-Fi was fine... Now I can connect again but I get disconnected about every hour out of nothing and have to put in my information again to reconnect even though I checked "Remember my login credentials"

I have an Asus laptop that does the exact same thing. I've tried finding a fix and no go. I think the drivers for it are basically screwed over and need to be fixed by Asus.

Oh okay, kinda glad to know that I'm not the only one with this issue.
I mean it's not that bad, since the laptop detects the connection after wakeup but it worked before the update and none of the hardware has changed so it must be Win 8.1...
I just feel so stuipd for installing that crap. They don't say "never touch a running system" for no reason...

Wait that showed up after you installed 8.1? I installed 8.1 as soon as I got my laptop so I didn't know that.

Holy mother of god finally!

The HDMI issue was solved by downloading the latest driver from the intel website. Before installing it said that the driver I'm about to install was an older one than the one already installed so I hesitated at first but then I went through with it and now it works like it did before.
Before that, I updated the Nvidia graphics card to no effect towards the HDMI issue and I had to download several versions of the Intel driver cause it kept saying that the ones I downloaded previously weren't compatible with my Intel hardware.

Anyway, I got my sound back. The WiFi issue stays though

Quick question: can I delete the driver data I downloaded (installer etc.)?

Wifi issues and 8.1 hold hands, my wifes computer has had horrible issues with wifi once I updated her computer to 8.1 even with the latest intel drivers for her wifi chip that intel says are designed for 8.1. What fixed the issue and I am not sure how is when I bought a new router. She has not had connection problems since.

Yeah, it sucks but unfortunately I'm pretty sure wont be able to convince the university to buy about 300 new routers haha

I just looked for a driver for the Wifi chip in the tablet (Broadcom BCM4330) but didn't find a newer one than the one already installed; guess that was in the driver package from Acer. So could it help if I uninstalled that one and installed the same one again?

EDIT: Even though the older driver for the laptop makes the HDMI sound work, the image, especially on full-screen video is visibly worse. Its kinda hard to describe. If the content is moving vertically you dont really see it but horizontal movements create lines from one end of the screen to the other; it looks like the image has been cut there and put together with a few lines of pixels missing.
Can I solve this somewhere in the settings or is it simply the older driver?

EDIT the 2nd: I solved the image-issue by switching from "duplicate" to "extended" screen when the HDMI is plugged in. If there is no HDMI connection the picture is normal anyway.
So the sound issue is fully solved but the wifi stays. I contacted the Acer support. If they can figure it out I will post the solution here but I'm still open to any suggestions from you about it. :)

Alrighty I asked the computer service of the university in the meantime and it turns out that the network isnt ready for Win 8.1 yet. All the other Win 8.1 users report issues with the university's WiFi. Now I just log in via the public Wifi and make it safer by using a VPN client to the actual uni Wifi.
