i just purchased an evga 780i and would like some suggestions on which vid cards would combine well. at the moment i only need one card but would like to expand to 2 possibly 3 cards in the future. also i'd like to make the use of the PCIe 2.0.

the 8800GTX is within my budget but is it PCIe 2.0 ready? having trouble making up my mind, any help is appreciated.

I may be wrong but I'm 99% sure the GTX doesn't use PCIe 2.0. I think the GT and the GTS (G92 core) are the only Nvidia cards out right now that do.

Fortyways is right, the GTX isn't 2.0. Concerning which card to get, the aforementioned G92 8800gt is the best bang for the buck card as of now. It's only slightly less competent than the GTX, while being upwards of $200 less. Benchmarks, for your consideration.

that's pretty much what i thought i just wanted the confirmation. is there much difference between the GT and the GTS because i'm looking at water cooling systems too.

edit: should have read your link first hermes, thanks for the info.

There isn't that much of a difference apart from an extra 10 unified shader processors on the GTS over the GT. Do even touch an 8800GTX, they are very inefficient and not to mention ancient being more than a year old. The G92 8800GTS is on par with it, at a very cheaper price, obviously the extra 256MB of ram the GTX has does create an edge over the GTS but not much.

one final thought...which is more desirable in GPUs more memory or faster clock speed. i haven't had time to wrap my mind around it so any opinions?

Comparing both, Clock speed is generally the better desired trait. Understand that comparing cards based on any spec is a hopeful endeavor. More important than any spec is the architecture the chip is built around. E.G Newer architecture negate direct comparison of secondary attributes.

i'll keep that in mind hermes. lemme just say i've taken in a lot from these forums and it's been a huge help. more friendly compared to other forums too. thanks.

I meant hopeless, not hopeful like i put in above. :o
