Now I did it...

Was screwing around trying to access the bios, see

http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=16511&page=2&pp=10

and then I messed it up big time.

In hopes of resetting my mobo, I took out the little button battery, disconnect the power cable to the board, and moved the jumpers around. :o (Did I know what I was doing, of course not)

Then I put everything back the way it was, turned it on and you guessed it, nothing nada.

Black screen, and maybe a single beep. So did I fry my motherboard??

If it's a single beep that usually means it's POSTing fine. Reset the BIOS again (jumper and battery) and reconnect the video card (take it out and put it back).

Really?? Wow, OK.

Like I said earlier, I dont really know what I am doing. :o

Could you give me some details on how to do what you said.

Reset Jumper?
Take out battery, didnt I do that already?

Remove video card...

Step 1 - Take out video card
Step 2 - Put video card back in?

Thanks for your help.

P.S.

Do you have any other suggestions in case the above doesnt work. Because when I do the above at home, I wont have any computer access till tomorrow. What should I look for if the mobo really is dead. 2 beeps, 3 beeps???

If the mobo is really dead it won't/shouldn't do anything. If you can post the make and model of the board you can find the BIOS version online and see what the beeps mean. As for resetting the BIOS you should have a little jumper next to or near the battery, move that over one spot (1-2 would go to 2-3 or vice versa) wait about 5 minutes, then move it back. The battery removal should also be done again just in case. As for the video card just take it out before you reset the BIOS, then put it back in once you HAVE reset it, then turn it on, record the beeps.

All that info is on the computer, which I cant start. If I remember correctly i thing the BIOS was version AO3. It was an intel board, maybe 845 chip set. 400 FSB.

You said its dead if it doesnt do anything? Well as far as I can tell it doesnt. I hit power, and maybe the CD spins, MAYBE the HDD spins, gives me a black screen and that after 90 seconds I might get a beep. But the green light on the board is on. :D

Thanks for your help

Well it's an intel, that's a start. If you can find out what model it is I'd be able to find the BIOS online. As for the doing nothing it could also be the PSU going bad/dying. What is the rating on the PSU (voltages and amperage on the 12V line)?

I think its an Intel 845PT

Oh boy might be getting out of my league here, but all I know is its a 250W PSU.
On the side of the PSU should be a little chart with alot of numbers on it. Find the numbers that correspond with the +12V line and list the amperage on it **A. As for the mobo doing nothing it could be anything. It would greatly help if you looked at the QUESTIONS 101 thread.

Computer is at home. So will look tonight.

Will try your other idea regarding resetting bios. If it works, will post happily tonight, if not, post again in the morning from work.

Thanks again

I take that back I am back to square one trying to access the bios. After a couple of restarts the memory tests, and push <del>... etc, stopped coming up and I went straight to the XP start up screen.

Any thoughts...

could you give me some details on how to do what you said.

reset jumper?
take out battery, didnt i do that already?
the motherboard manual will have the specifics for that as well as locations of where jumpers might be

ok QUESTIONS 101.
