Number of threats dramatically increased

I have the AVG free which has always dealt with the odd threat I seemed to get. Over the past couple of days the number of attempted attacks on my pc has dramatically risen. I've only been logged for 15 minutes today and already AVG has flashed up 2 and dealt with them. Can anyone advise?

thanks for your fast response Punk! Major cyber attack occurring never had anything like that before. I have now upgraded to the paid AVG and done a few clean ups, changed my browser to Mozilla Foxfire and done a second scan and all clear. Have had no malicious pop ups since then. I'm a heavy user in general but surfing much more at the moment due to projects going on and visited a great deal of sites I suppose something may have come from one of those.
many thanks again!

I highly suggest you run those scans as I doubt even the paid version of AVG will detect everything that has infected you. In fact, there is no point for the paid version except for better prevention of infection. The anti-virus doesn't get better, you just have more programs such as spam, malware prevention. If you are already infected, getting the paid version won't change a thing.
