Nvidia 8700M

My 18th Birthday and High School graduation are coming in June, and I'm looking at getting an Alienware m15x system for college as a gift.

The main components I'm looking at are
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T9300 2.5GHz (6MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz – 2 x 1024MB
Internal High-Definition Audio with surround sound
and lastly
512MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8700M GT

Throw in some software, and this all comes to just over $2600. I don't think the people in charge of paying for this whole thing are going to want to shell out the extra $350 for the 8800GTX, so does anyone have any experience or knowledge concerning this GPU? I know its performance will be far less impressive than the 8800, but I'm not really sure how it will handle in relation to the 7950GT in my desktop. I guess I'm basically just asking how people think this system will perform compared with my desktop, as described in sig below. Thanks in advance.

Yea, I'm well aware of that difference...unfortunately it's clearly visible in their prices as well. Simply put, unless the 8800 drops in price dramatically over the next few months, I'm just not sure if I could afford it. Thanks for the links, Omega. I'll see if I can go find some more benchmark results around.

Yeah sorry for ruining it but, they are seen way to higher than they actually are. Alienware is just like falcon-northwest. They are overpriced and most of the time slow. You could build that pc for half the cost and customize it to the way you like it.

my current system is an alienware, and for the 2.5 years or so that I've owned it I've had essentially no problems, been very happy with its performance, and the customer service. Yes, I understand that I could buy the components seperately and save money, but call it brand loyalty. Also, while I'm confident that I could throw a desktop together with no problems, I have a lot less experience with laptops and their parts. While I understand I'm not getting the best possible deal, I'm saving myself the trouble, supporting a brand I like, getting something I like aesthetically etc. etc. I'm not upset or offended or anything that people aren't fans of AW, just don't think this is the thread for discussing it.

if you think alienware is expensive, look at voodoo the featherlight envy is 2.6k starting :P but, i would recommend that you do get that 8800

yes their stuff is very expensive..i think largely in part to their crazy custom cases. And again, I don't think the 8800 is happening.

Anyway, if possible, I'd like to get this thread back on track. Most of the research I've done on this GPU dates back to the summer, so it's mostly pre-release speculation, or criticism of very early demos. It's tough to find just straight-up reviews from people who have used the card. I'm looking for some more up-to-date information. Is there anyone who has used this GPU? (Perhaps I'd have better luck in the notebook forums.) If it helps, I plan on mostly running Final Fantasy XI (old game..graphics should be a non-issue), Lord of the Rings Online (which at full specs slows down my 7950GT in more crowded/complicated areas), and I guess maybe some Oblivion..that kinda thing. Any feedback from anyone who has used this card, or even just knows what they're talking about would be great. (Again..I know it's not as good as the 8800M.)
