Nvidia Driver Issues

Wow, I am so sick of messing with this. I am having trouble with my nvidia 8600m gt

I have had a blue screen with "nv4_disp.dll" two times in the last 6 months.

I know it relates to nvidia driver problems, and I have now tried twice to repair this issue. I just installed another update. I know to disable the antivirus when I do this.

I dont like blue screens. And I believe that I've got it fixed.

But if any of you out there have dealt with this particular error before, then would you let me know what you did.

I looked up the issue online and apparently a lot of people get bluescreens from that. The only site that gave adequate advice said to start the computer in safe mode, go into the device manager and uninstall the video card. Then restart the computer and reinstall new drivers. Did you reinstall the drivers or just update them?

nv4_disp.dll

I updated it.

I didn't do it in safe mode as there was nothing in the driver installation instructions to do it in safe mode. My driver instructions gave a definite about (among other things) turning off my internet security before installing the update.

If it happens again then I will try it in safe mode.

There is SO MUCH that is contradictory out there. When i first looked up this problem, a few months ago, all I found was lots of people guessing. I finally did some thinking and said to myself "Hmmm, nv4_disp.dll, that looks and sounds a lot like nVIDIA! and the _disp obviously looks like display. So I realized that it had to be my video card.

My computer is a Dell so I talked to them, and they said that there is no need to install these updates in safe mode, even for the BIOS updates. And there is nothing where I get my Dell specific updates that mentions using safe mode while performing these operations.

All that is required is to do a restart when I'm finished updating (duh, obviously).

But it perturbs me that it happened twice. I though I had fixed it the first time. But I don't think I disabled my anti-virus before I updated the first time. That may have been what the problem was.

I would love to learn how to permanently fix this. I know that there are a LOT of people out there with the same problem.

Yeah, well one guy said he found the solution by upgrading to 64-bit but I'm sure that's not the cheapest or easiest way out. Yeah I would just trying completely uninstalling the card and then reinstalling the card with the latest drivers. What video card are you running by the way?

my card

Oops my bad!

I have an nVIDIA 8600m GT, installed by Dell at the factory.

XP-SP3
Dell Inspiron 1520
Intel T7500 duo core 2.2 GHz
3GB RAM
225 GB HDD

I really dont wanna mess with reinstalling the card just yet. I will probably let a friend of mine do that if it comes to it. I only do as much as I have to, which is usually a lot. I would really rather be fishing than messing with a computer problem over my summer.

And Dell computers are a little finicky. I love my computer, but if I dont keep right on top of every update and keep my system immaculate it doesn't run well.

Oh sorry I don't know if I stated that right. I meant reinstall it as is software, not hardware. Just go into device manager, uninstall the display adapter, shut down the computer, reinstall the video card drivers.

nVIDIA driver

What is the deal with the safe mode install. I havent ever performed an update like that.

The only time I ever used safe mode was to FINALLY get rid of some final vestiges of a factory trial of Norton. God I hate Norton AV.

Haha I don't even know if Safe mode is really necessary though. I think it is only necessary if you need to set admin controls to get into the Device Manager. You should just be able to go into the Device Manager and disable the device under the display adapters. Then just shut down and restart the computer, and install the newest drivers.

nVIDIA problem, no more?

I may have fixed that display problem. And then I get a whole new blue screen error with more STOP code that I have ever seen on one of those messages.

I am so sick of this. So very sick of it.

I have checked, EVERYTHING! I have run all the diagnostics, all the updates that were necessary, I dont get viruses or worms or trojans, I dont visit questionable sites, I keep my computer clean and I do all the recommended maintenance. I am so tired of major errors popping up.

Why cant computers be just slightly more stable. Its like a constant uphill battle to keep things going right on this machine. I hear some people like to play games! I have spent most of the night trying to find the solution to a problem that apparently nobody else has.

What a waste of my time.

Ha!

I may have singled out a potential hole in my computer! It only goes to blue screen if I allow it to go into standby. It doesn't do it when I am working (yet!). I am thinking it may be something associated with the standby setup or just something to do with my computer sitting idle for a long period of time.

Hmmm it made me think...........................
