When I was flying home, on Northwest Airlines Airbus A330, I notice that my In Flight-Entertainment (IFE) was restarting. And as it was restarting I saw the Linux's Penguin. I thought that was interesting that a company like Northwest Airlines uses Linux software for there In Flight-Entertainment program.

security purposes ? i think so
if there was a hacker onboard the plane and the IFE was windows...lord knows what would have happened ....lol

Well it's likely that somewhere on the system there's a link to all the other systems and if you could access those you could have an issue! Another interesting OS fact is that South West Trains use Windows 95 on their new 300 ton 100mph trains!

intresting :)

i was shocked to see that cash machines were running on Windows Xp...i saw one loading up:D

Now my cash isnt safe lol.

every single touch screen game you see at bars and resturaunts runs on Linux, lots of interactive vending machines run on a linux kernel, its not hard. It's cheap for the companies because of opens source, and it is stable.

Plus I thought you meant the rappers NWA

Maybe the majority run linux, but I know for sure that some run windows - I was at a bar with my friend and we noticed that the touchscreen games (betting) machine kept restarting itself every so often (surprise surprise), and when it did we went into setup and changed a load of settings on the machine. :) I think that was windows 2K but can't remember.

That is strange everyone I have seen (when rebooting them) run some sort of Linux. I have never seen a windows one, but I am sure they do exist, but majority of them use Linux. Most likely the ones that use windows are made by people who never took the time to learn or develop for linux. It doesn't make any sense to purchase a license for every OS when you can just use a free open source one from a business model perspective. Not to mention, they supply an image of the machine so if anything fails software (or hardware wise) you can just reimage it and be done.

My buddy works for a local (the only one in town that I know of actually) arcade repair shop. They rent, sell, lease, and repair all arcade and vending machines. I have been in their shop and looked around and most things I was allowed to tinker with of those types of machines (touch screen games, ie mega touch for example) all ran Linux.

Yeah it certainly would seem to make more sense to run linux, for the reasons you mentioned. The fact that the windows OS was causing random restarts for that particular machine in the first place is another good reason. The bar I mentioned is actually my local, and I'm going there tonight, so maybe I should suggest a linux platform to them for any new machines.:)

I need another excuse to chat up the bar maid anyway! (Actually I'll leave computers out of it!)
