obtain IP address

Hi,

Maybe a dull question, but I'm not so good with network stuff.
My new netbook (running windows 7 home premium) automatic obtain ip-address 169.XXXXXXX
Because my ADSL modem has IP-address 10.XXXXXXX it doesn't allow me
to go to the internet.

When I plug in a network cable in modem and netbook the obtained IP address is in the 10.XXXX range and internet is available.
How can I have the netbook obtain an IP address in the 10.XXXXX range without cable? My other notebooks just do (windows vista)....

by the way: I want to obtain the IP address automatic instead of hardcoded

Are you using a router? If you're router is connected to the modem, and the PC's are connected to the router all the computers on your network should be given similar IP's (i.e. 192.168.0.x), the IP of 169.x.x.x basically means that the connection is invalid or limited, and is not communicating correctly with the DHCP server/service.
 
did you mean when it automatically connects, did you mean wirelessly?

do you have more than 1 routing device? (like a modem router and a wireless router?

when your automatically connected to the 169.xxx etc can you ping the 10.xxx modem?

if you can can you ping an outside IP address? like 209.85.135.104 (google)?
 
Omega is correct. This is a problem with DHCP. Your router will be acting as the DHCP server (unless you have it configured as otherwise). Your modem IP address is correct, it is what the ISP has provided for you, and your DHCP server (your router) has a pool (default, usually 100 ip addresses) that hosts on the LAN are able to use. 169.x.x.x doesn't sound right, it should be 168.x.x.x

What kind of router are you using? You do not statically configure your IP address. Like said above, it will be assigned, and the Network Address Translation (NAT) protocol will do its job.
