OC, is it really needed?

I was just curious if OC was really needed. I know it helps boosts performance for slower PCs, and helps with multi-tasking and using powerfull programs, but the way its talked about on here makes it seem as if no CPU is effecient enough to run any program without a slight lag. So, is OC really needed? I'm only planning on playing a few games, so I'm not very sure if OCing is needed...

OCing is mainly done for "free" performance. Even though most forget that this "free" performance requires the purchase of quality cooling.
