Oc temps and coolers

I managed to OC my i7 920 2.66Ghz to 3.8GHz 1.21v after an hours stress with Prime temps was showing 87C and suddenly i got blue screen! 87C is kinda hot so i decresed the speed to 3.62Ghz 1.185v and after 3hours stress with prime ive declared it stable. I got temp average 76C and a peak on 1core 79C. Im kinda new in OC'ing so i was wondering what temps do you guys get? I use a Thermaltake SpinQ VT as cpu cooler, so if you guys can share your experience with coolers and your temps with what speeds and volts?!

Your temps are ok. It's hard for me to remember, because it's been atleast 6 months since I've ran 1366 cpu's, but I the I7 920 I had was a golden clocker and ran 4.2ghz 1.28v and with the Megahalems my temps topped out in the 80-85c range IIRC.

But you have to remember, practically no real world application is going to stress the cpu like prime95. It may get to 87c there, but I doubt it would ever see 70c with anything else you did.
 
Thats true, prime95 really brings the heat up, imo the i7 runs hotter than most cpu's, maby not.
I could try switching the Thermaltakes own paste to Arctic Silver 5, could get a slight improvement.
Hoping to get to 4Ghz @ 1.25v, and if the temps is alright then 4.2Ghz @ maby 1.3-1.33v.
 
No you won't make 4ghz at 1.25 if 3.8 1.21v wasn't stable.

You have a more typical chip....probably 1.28-1.30 for 4ghz and 1.3625 for 4.2....but it will get too hot on that cooler for that OC.

Changing paste may net you 1-2c, it's not even worth the effort really.
 
yeah, I think your right. damn!! never buying an exotic cooler again, should have gone with something big and simple instead..
 
The megahalems is an extremely good cooler, I highly recommend it.

With that said though, an I7 at 3.6ghz is still a beast man...you really won't even notice any difference at 4ghz anyway.
 
ye, I think im gonna keep it @ 3.6Ghz Its surely enough for now, but I have found OC'ing kinda addicting. every day is like, I wanna do mooore.

nuf said, thinking of upgrading to i7 2600k, it seems to be one hell of a chip :)
 
What fans are you using and how do you have the cooler mounted? I'd recommend you get some gentle typhoons and mount the cooler so it draws air from the 5.25" bays and exhausts it out the rear of the case, rather than drawing air from the back of your GPU and exhausting it out the top.

Front panel a 120mm taking fresh air and same thing with the 80mm at the bottom of the case.
The "side" a 120mm blowing fresh air directly att my cpu cooler.
