OC/UL BE 550 Phenom??

I traded my laptop for a user built PC with a 3.1GHZ BE Phenom II x2 550 processor and a gigabyte motherboard. I have already tried OCing to 4GHZ (using multiplier), but it reset to the factory 3.1GHZ. I now have it running at 3.6 now and everything is fine. So my question is, is there a voltage change needed to run 4ghz on this processor?

Also, how would one go about trying to unlock it to quad or tri?

I would guess that you will need a voltage bump in order to get to 4GHz. Hold off as long as you can until you need to bump th voltage. So when it fails the stability test, bump the voltage a bit.

For unlocking cores you need a motherboard that has a core unlocker feature. I'm guessing that your does so check the BIOS for an ACC (Active Core Control) feature.

Ok, I am going to finish downloading my Antivirus, and the Nvidia driver, then Ill run the Prime 95 on it. (assuming it may crash.), how long should i run it for?

sometimes it doesn't. It is hit or miss. You can try to voltage bump to get the extra cores more stable but I wouldn't bump a whole lot.

I didnt get any cores at all. Right now, I really dont need any more anyway, I can just Upgrade to a 955 when I am ready.

at the lowest overvolt and 4 GHz it was unresponsive even to the POST. Immediate BSOD at 3.7 and no overvolt. 1 BSOD at 3.6 and stock voltage. still letting it test its self at 3.6 for a while just to be sure it wasnt a fluke.

Bumped voltage by .050 @ 3.7GHz. Getting ready to run prime 95 for a while. Hopefully Ill get that 4+ GHz I want out of it.

The Phenom II 550 is c2 stepping (unless things have changed) so 3.9ghz is more than likely the highest it will go.

My 550 ran at 3.8ghz as it was a sweet spot... 3.9ghz wanted too much vcore...

What cooler you have on it? You monitoring temps while you doing all this? Maybe heat is an issue.
If the bios has manual unlock features, you could try those for the 3rd and 4th core separately. Also, disable CnQ if it has it, that seems to make a diff sometimes.
As a matter of fact, what board is it?

3.7GHz was BSOD as soon as Prime 95 started. I think the Vcore is not high enough to satisfy it.
I'm was told not to exceed 1.550 volts on air, and 3.4 was unstable at every setting between stock and 1.550.
I may not be able to get anything out of this over stock. hoped I could, but it will make a good HD Movie player while i buy other componets.

cooler is Artic cooling Deep freeze 7 i think. Ill double check when im at home.
board is Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P.

Your MB appears to have 8+2 power design which is good but it does not have VRM cooling. You should keep your vcore at a max of 1.475 as a dual core or 1.45 as a quad.

Can you post a cpuz of your ram and cpu tab...??

Could it have anything to do with it being a year old processor never out of stock added with a OC newb and instructions and cautions coming from everywhere.
The most stable one was 3.6GHz just through the bumped multiplier and no overvolt. Never Primed that setup, but only 2 BSOD on that under windows. Do you think it may be more stable at 3.6 with a slight bumb in voltage? If so, how much over stock?

i can when I get home from school.
