OCing 7800GT w/ nv5 rev 3

I just bought the 7800GT w/ the nv5 Silencer Revision 3 and want to know if anybody knows how much I would be able to overclock it, considering that I have adequate case airflow.

dont bother... youll get amazing fps anyways. the nv silencer wasnt a waste, it could double card lifetime.
id bet it can overclock alot if you applied the heatsink correctly though.
does it have ramsinks?
you wont know how much u can until you try

It covers all the ram, yes. Hopefully I can get it up to maybe 520/1250 without concern. Do you think I could?

I have done that with my 6600GT and it didn't go up to what I have manually overclocked to. So that will not be an accurate max OC. By the way, speaking of my 6600GT, I had a friend sell it on Amazon.com for around $140 when you can get it off the Egg for $120 new, LMAO (oh cmon, I feel sorry for the guy;) ).

Not the best ones in the world for the backside but decent

Whether we think it can or not doesnt have an effect: gotta try (and realize you could be saying bye bye at any point in time of course)

i have a pretty decent air flow in my case, and ive been able to get my card to 480/1700, and coolbits will set it at 496/1750... but i scale it back just in case to 470/1400. the memory clock helps more than the gpu

I would not bother overclocking if it where my card as it just does not really need it. Of course by reading your Sig your favorite games are 3dmark03,04,05 as well as aquamark :P.

Since I dont have all that much faith in the memory cooling capacity (in particular, the back side) of the NVSR3, id concentrate more on the core clocks to start with

How did you get the memory upto 1700mhz?? or even 1400mhz for that matter.....Mine doesnt go over 1200 but you're well over GTX levels. Ummmmmm how did you do it lol?

Mines a complete dud... I get artifacts and freezing above 1125 for the memory. Cores pretty good though, I can run 480-490 without problems.

eroops i meant 1200 lol.....

Ahhh that sounds more like mine lol. My max is 470/1160 but soon as my buddy gets home im gonna install one of his floppy drives on my PC so I can do the volt mod from 1.4 to 1.5 then hoping for 500/1200 range.

Yay voltmodding :D Hmmm that's not covered under Evga's uber-warranty is it? ;)

Its actually a BFG 7800gt and I highly doubt their warranty covers it :) . It's a risk to flash obviously but i'll take that chance. I've read of a lot of people who've done it and worked well for them....but theres another way involving a pencil and covering up resistors or something like that. Theres where I draw the line on overclocking/modding though hehe.

Yeah i know you got a BFG and I got a Leadtek, but I was just wondering (if you knew) whether EVGA (which has the best warantee in the industry now). I guess it comes down to whether voltmodding is interpreted as "damage" :P

EVGA is offering a lifetime warranty for all of its cards. BFG also offers a warranty, but apparently, EVGA's is different in that it covers any damage to the card as long as it's not physical. So, for instance, if the EVGA card is damaged by trying to overclock it too high, or if lightning fries it because it was not protected by a surge protector, EVGA will replace it free of charge while BFG will not. MSI's warranty is only good for three years, with basically the same conditions as BFG. Depending on the user, three years may be longer than the "lifetime" of the card, but covering all but physical damage is a definite win for EVGA. Aside from power surge, overclock and heat damage, they'll even cover a failed video BIOS flash (we asked). You can find more information about each manufacturer's warranty policy at their respective websites.

Hehe absolutely, although ASUS is pretty damn good too (not as all-encompasing as EVGA but damn it hard to be that all encompassing)

Yeah EVGA does have the best warranty/support of them all..... also their trade in policies are by far the best as well. These days you'll be hard-pressed to ruin a perfectly working video card by just overclocking it. Not instantly anyways, it might die over time quicker though. Im not sure if even EVGA would cover a card damaged due to a volt mod... bios flash gone wrong yeah but not sure bout a volt mod. Never know with EVGA though seem they literally go out of their way and even lose money on a sale/trade in to satisfy their customers. The ONLY reason I bought a BFG is because it's all Future Shop had (had to use their credit card to buy it) otherwise i'd have gone EVGA all the way. Btw Asus might have a good warranty but their prices are too high ($1100 for a 7800gtx 512 laff) and their customer support is horrendous. Praetor you could be hired onto Asus as a customer support tech and be fired because you actually would know what your talking about too well.;)
