Ocz psu

So a buddy of mine was looking to get some 500w PSU for about 60 bucks and I noticed this PSU for the same price after rebate but I wanted to double check before I threw it at him.

This way he can have SLI or a Phenom later on without having to re-upgrade his PSU.

How exactly does this work out? I never had a 4 rail PSU before. Will 1 rail have the ability to pull 72a or will max be 18 per rail even if only say 1 is in use?

He will be running a 4850 and a X2 6000+ atm but will move on to a phenom II later I am sure.

On that one each rail can only pull a max of 18 amp on any one rail. But the Total max amps of all the 12V rails is about 56/57 amps. You dont just add them all together.

Not a bad deal on it with the rebate and free shipping.

Yeah a good deal for what his price range is though I gotta say I am glad I stayed away from multiple rails.

You by chance favorite the single card/SLI list of amps the actually updated list that isn't stickied it would seem? I can't seem to find it.

I am curious if he will be able to run his 4870 and a possible Deneb (AM2+) later?

Think the first Phenom II AM2+ are only 125W.
That OCZ would work just fine with a single 4870. I would probable go with a 750/800W with about 60 amps single 12V rail to C/F two of them.

I see thanks.

Will throw it at him tomorrow then so he can do his own research he wont be ordering till Friday and the deal is good till the 31st.

BTW happen to know a better site then http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp for measuring power?

Reason I ask is based off that my computer shouldn't be able to boot up at its current settings yet runs perfectly at max load. Is it just guessing wats vs judging amps on the PSU?

I dont ever use those things, just add it up in my head.;)

Yours would be about the same as mine. Think a 8800/9800GT minimun suggested on the average system is 400W with 26/27 amps. total on the 12V rail. So a good 500/550W with 35/40 amps would be on the safe side.

Well I am talking more of a total system power not just the GPU. Unlike Kuro I am way to cheap to buy his fan controller/wattage device ^-^

A 6 pin PCIe power connector can only supply 75W and a PCIe slot is 75W. Think a PCIe 2.0 slot can maybe pull up to 100W. If your card only has one PCIe power connector then the most it can pull by itself is either 150W or 175W.
