Odd crashing (overheating)

Hi there, Recently my computer has been crashing with low load, like im using chrome atm and Piriform Speccy says my cpu temp is 74degrees and mobo temp of 70 degrees, while cpu usage is between 10-15% according to windows task manager.
I was only made aware of this problem after my computer crashed, giving me this error; io error status 0xc000000e, I restarted the computer and it told me to "reboot and select proper boot device" I rebooted, went into bios and my ssd did not show. I exited the bios and got the error "CPU over temperature error" so I shut it down and left it for a while. When i later booted the ssd showed and I was able to boot although this cycle of crashing followed by all this is re-ocurring.
What do you think could be causing this? and how could I try to fix this? reapply thermal paste? or could it be another problem? Thanks

PC specs;
Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80GHz
8gb ram
mobo: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P7P55D-E PRO (LGA1156)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450
ssd: 60gb crucial m4
hdd: Samsung 1tb

Edit: up to 97 degrees on cpu and mobo with 50% cpu usage according to piriform speccy

Is that 97 degrees C or F? If C thats way too hot. Most likely you need to remove heatsink and reapply new thermal paste after removing the old stuff.

Thanks yeh its in degrees, I think I will do that and so do you think the ssd not being detected straight after crashing is just a problem cuased by the overheating? As I said the drive re-apears after leaving the computer shutdown for a bit.

I have fixed the over heating i think, the temps at load rearely go over 30degrees C i think, Yet after about an hour the computer crashes still, I tried changing the sata port for the ssd from the 6gb/s to one of the non 6gb/s sata ports on the mobo and yet; the computer crashed after about an hour, giving me a BSOD, the ssd was then not detected and then I have to shutdown and wait a little for the ssd to become detected in the bios again as I get the 'reboot and insert proper boot device' error

(the ssd is my boot drive)

Update SSD and mobo BIOS. Reinstall windows.

If you have had crashed due to heat, you need to make sure you have the not corrupted the OS installation. Also, the M4 SSD is known to have issues with the original bios, and make sure you have latest mobo bios and drivers.

If you want it to be perfect...

Update BIOS http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P7P55DE_PRO/HelpDesk_Download/ (specific updates to HDD and SATA)
Update M4 bios http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-...nd-Your-Firmware-Revision-Windows/ta-p/114208

Then reinstall Windows.

Thanks, yeh I had already updated the firmware on the ssd, Or so I thought.. although once u mentioned it I checked my version and I was still on firmware version 0001, I had a trouble updating the firmware - I finally got it to update via bootable usb firmware update with the ssd on sata connection 1. I have now re-installed windows and shall see if the issue persists,

Thanks
