Odd Recuva scan progess reading

I recently had a 1 TB Western Digital Green SATA drive show up as unformatted. I initially tried GetDataBack which found some files which I copied over to another drive. Also tried TestDisk which didn't seem to do anything as far as making the drive readable. There were a lot more files - large video files - than GetDataBack found however and it would be a pain to recapture them all so now I'm trying Recuva.

After an initial period of scanning with Recuva where it found a number of files, the progress was stuck at 99% on Stage 1 for a long time even though the progress bar graphic was blank. Since then it's showing numbers like 2657% and the estimated time left rapidly changes all over the place 31 days, 3 days, 2 hours, 11 days etc. etc. and the progress bar graphic goes from largely green to nothing then back to largely green - all still in stage 1. So far it's still showing the same number of files found that showed up during the initial period.

Anyone have any insights as to what's going on?

System is WinXP SP3, latest version of Recuva.

Thanks.

It is my thought that the hard drive you are scanning has some serious problems. It may be likely that you cannot get any more data off of it. I would try again if you value the data.

I would learn the lesson and make backups of data you value at least once a month.

This *is* the backup drive.
