OEM and Full Retail XP.

I am a bit confused about how to tell when bidding on e bay whether an XP operating system is OEM or Full Retail. As I understand it OEM 's are usually bought already installed on a PC and when that motherboard dies so does the O/S License whereas Full Retail versions bought off the shelf can be legally moved on but can only be on one computer at a time.
On e bay OEM's can be bought and providing they have never been installed before they can be installed on any PC. However I often see items which appear to be OEM up for auction as 'used' which seems to suggest they too can be moved on, which if the product key has been used seems unlikely. Sometimes the seller pleads ignorance about whether an O/P IS OEM or Retail.
No doubt Microsoft can tell from either the 25 figure code or the MPN.but how can we.?

An OEM copy has just the CD, key, and small manual. Retail has an elaborate box.

Legally the [unbraded] OEM's can only be installed on one machine and cannot be transferred. Retail can be moved to another machine as long as the previous machine is no longer using it.

A word of advise: Don't buy an OS off eBay. A lot of them are pirated. Look here to tell what is real and what isn't

Thanks, more or less what I thought. On the web page for retail you directed me to I noticed the microsoft code for the item is N09-00984. When I googled that the item came up sometimes as OEM so it looks as though part nos don't indicate Retail or OEM.
Packaging then may be an indication but of course does not obviate pirate copies. I will be careful on e bay. Cheers.

I would not even look at buying Windows XP. Windows 7 64-bit has a lot more built in security features and improvements over Windows XP. Windows 7 64-bit also supports more RAM. 1.5 gigabytes of RAM is the minimum to run a decent system in my opinion presently and Windows XP only supports up to 3.25 gigabytes of RAM.
