Office keeps trying to reinstall @ startup

Hello all.

This is probably a simple one to solve, but as my name suggests, it's a bit beyond me :o

Everytime I startup my PC, Microsoft Office attempts to reinstall itself, and it appears to be looking for the startup disk when it does so. My office program is working fine (it's the old 2000 version but I'm happy with it).

All I knew to try was to go into Add/Remove Programs, but alas, that does not help as I do not wish to either Add a program or Remove it. I just want it to stop attempting to reinstall itself at startup.

It's very annoying. Any ideas to solve this are welcome :)

Do you still have the install cd for it? If so, the easiest and less time consuming thing to do is just reinstall the program. Were you infected recently? Sometimes getting infected causes this to happen with certain programs.

Hi no, I no longer have it. I've moved house twice since it was installed.
I have a five y.o. son who uses this PC so who knows what things have self loaded whilst he's playing his 'shoot-em-up' online games. Hmmm.
 
Time to run some scans then.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log
 
Well blow me down. That seems to have worked!:good: I installed Malwarebytes as you suggested, did the quick scan and two adware programs came up in the red. I have now removed them, turned PC off, then back on - with no annoying reinstalls from Office.
