Oh crap...

On startup, I get a message that SMART detects imminent hard drive failure. I presume means that I'm going to have to replace my entire hard drive. Is there anything that I should be doing, aside from backing up my files (which I have already done). Should I take it in to get a new hard drive immediately, or can I just wait until it finally dies? Everything seems to be working fine at the moment, so I'd kind of like to put it off as long as possible.

Well

Try a full scan of the disk ;). A full scasn meaning when it scans all the sectors on the HDD. Some may be gone or you may be facing some threshold figures in other SMART attributes.

It could be that your spin up time, for example, is unusually slow. SMART will pick up on things like this and report back to you. If some attributes of the drive are unusually slow or acting strangeley then SMART may well tell you that your HDD's about to die.

I would back up everything immediately then just wait until it dies. It might be a false alarm and everythings fine..... but then again it could die tomorow.....

u may have some bad sectors occouring inside the hard drive, how old is it?
3 years old and still under the extended warranty.

I tried the diagnostic scan in F2, is that the scan you're referring to?

Thanks for the advice. :)
