So I just got a call from my ma saying my cousin just got slapped with a fine for DOWNLOADING MUSIC. She got caught because her college IP address saw she was downloading or whatever. So she had to turn over her lappy to the college and pay a 3000 dollar (american) fine. So my question is, What if you have a program like Peer Gaurdian? What does that really do? And also, Does your IP address change when you go from say college to home, like on different wireless routers?

1) You should be ready to go, also don't believe anyone who says it's illegal peerguardian is not illegal it's for increased privacy.

2) Peerguardian works by using IP ranges or lists to block certain IPs from entering your computer, typically the best lists can be found on torrenting websites. (Again all legal).

3) I think so but someone should be able to shed more light on this.

Thank you, I haven't downloaded from Limewire or anyother "wires" in a long time. Someone pointed me to PeerGuardian for stopping spam and help against hackers, I guess.

But another thing, That kind of means we have no privacy no more, right? I read on-line some lady had over 500 songs which were LEGALLY bought, and somehow she was sharing them and she got fined up the ying-yang for no knowledge of her legally bought music was being shared.

So, how do they catch people any how? like do they sit there at there computers and and just say "Oh, I feel like ruining some happy kids day" Or like do they watch certain things and something's not right or what? How exactly does one get caught by the RIAA? They ain't gonna catch me, I can tell ya'll that right now.

Whoa, I just read that some ISP's sell people's internet browseing to people who are welling to buy them. That seems a little out there.

On someone else's network they can set of tons and tons of different ways to track and log where you go. Peer guardian can't mask everything.

Regardless of how blocked it is, or if it is encrypted it still leaves a trace of bandwidth and if you are downloading gigs and gigs of bandwidth each week, it still makes a case. They track drug crop growers by how much electricity they use, they can do the same with bandwidth.

Truth is, there is always a trace, no matter what. While there may not be a way to prove what is on your comp if you encrypt your file system, encrypt your network traffic and "forget the password" when the authorities come get you, that doesn't mean you aren't leaving digital foot prints every where you go.

Pretty simple, when you download from utorrent you are p2p sharing, whats that mean you say? You have to share(not always).... so you can see the other clients IP's, if not and IP then an address. They just DNS look up and thats all they need to find the IP, trace it on a site or use software to trace it. They find the ISP and call them with your address and say "This IP is acting as a server and is giving our content out, and because of DMCA they have to send you a letter and tell you to stop and delete it ect ect.
It is by no means, illegal to download music or movies......
It is however illegal to upload someone elses content to someone else
That is were they get you, for running a "server".
 
Hm, I was under the impression that DOWNLOADING wasn't the thing the authorities go after, but the people Seeding out the torrent, file, mp3, etc
 
Hmm, So lol I'll just stop seeding haha. Thats true actually thinking about what my ma said. She didn't get caught downloading it was the fact that she had her songs sharing....Hmmmm:rolleyes:
 
I had a simple solution for all the crap my university has on their network. Me and a friend split a Comcast bill. I pay my $23 a month and get free use to use the net in whatever manner I choose. My university blocks any P2P traffic so even WoW updates are banned.

It is 100% illegal to download music/movies that are copyrighted.
 
Well that may be true rambo, but its not the people that download that are the true problem, its the people that seed. if you dont have Seeders, you can't have downloaders
